Be My Valentine?

Linh made this wonderful oatmeal cookie for our Valentine's Day dinner. It was the perfect finish to my meal of heart-shaped crab cakes, broiled pork loin, and vegetable couscous.

Aivy's contribution to the special day was to kindly take a half-hour nap while her mom and dad had a leisurely dinner alone. We tried to limit our adult conversation to topics that did not include Aivy or Calvin, but it proved impossible.

Our own relationship has become inseparable from that of our relationships with our children. It sounds weird, but it's actually quite nice. We're a family...even on Valentine's Day.

On Sunday, the weather here in Austin was nearly perfect-- sunny skies and 70 degrees. So we went to the Austin Nature Center and had a picnic.

Aivy loves to drive.

There was a really cool exhibit that allowed kids to pretend they were amateur paleontologists.

Since I loved dinosaurs as a kid, I expected that Aivy would have the same inclination towards fossils and big words.

She seemed to generally enjoy the experience, but we're not so sure that she wants to become a paleontologist just yet.

She really just likes to dig. And we're okay with that.

Oh yeah...and she likes to wear fruit peels on her head.

And root around in the leftover plastic bags when we come back from shopping. We know that we should use the environmentally responsible canvas bags, but who are we to deny our daughter this simple pleasure? We know that plastic bags are not toys, but she looks so darn funny when she plays with them. I think she looks just like a crazy little bag lady.
