Homemade Potpourri
Background info: Sunday morning, cool and sunny outside. Mom and Aivy were sleeping in Aivy’s room.
Linh: half awaken by a strange smell, “Humm…what’s that smell?”
Linh: now fully awakened by the mysterious smell, “Crap! Something is burning outside. Oh, no, what’s Doug burning up this time? The smoky smell is really strong in here. I hope it doesn’t bother Aivy. Gosh, is Doug burning more leaves outside? I thought I told him I’ll call the police on him if he burns them again?” (More on burning leaves later)
Doug: quietly opened Aivy’s door with a big sunny smile, “Do you like my surprise?”
Linh: puzzled and still concerned over the smoky smell in the room: “What surprise, dear?”
Doug: “The smell, do you like it? I made it for you?” Then he picked up an aluminum dish that he had put in the room earlier.
Doug: Showing Linh what’s in the dish, “It’s homemade potpourri…barbequed chicken scented.”

I’ll Call the Police on You
Linh: Doug, please don’t burn the leaves again.
Doug: Why not?
Linh: It’s not safe.
Doug: Sure it is. It’s okay.
Linh: Really, Doug. It’s a fire hazard. When the wind blows the leaves away while they’re still burning you’re going to burn the house down.
Doug: Well, I’ll have the hose ready next time.
Linh: So, you’re telling me that you’re going to put out the flames on all the leaves with a hose while the wind blows them in every direction and everywhere?
Doug: How else do you want me to get rid of all those leaves?
Linh: What about those big trash bags? You can put them in the bags like we’ve always done. By the way, I’m calling the police on you next time for real because this is the second time you burnt those leaves.”
Doug: You’re calling the cops on me!?!? For real?
Linh: I’m serious. I don’t want you to burn our house and the neighbors’ houses.
Doug: I can’t believe you’re going to call the cops on me! Well, I’m going to call the cops on you!
Linh: For what?
Doug: I’m going to report you with your expired State Inspection sticker!

Shopping Cart
Background Info: Our first family shopping trip together a couple of weeks ago at Target. Aivy was in her car seat carrier.
Doug: Grabbing a shopping cart, “Hey Linh, where do you think we should put Aivy?”
Linh: Unsure herself, “Just put her in the cart. That should work.”
Doug: “That doesn’t seem right, but it will work. We can just put the groceries kinda around her and below the cart.”
So Linh and Doug proceeded to store Aivy in the large, deep, basin portion of the grocery cart and merrily pushed the cart into the store to go shopping. It wasn’t until Aivy got hungry and cranky did we realize the obvious—all the other parents had placed their children on the top of the cart near the handle…so that you could actually see the child.
We’re fairly certain everyone was laughing at us as we realized that car seats were actually designed to click into place near the handle. Or maybe it was just Aivy.
